What is the Worker Health Check?
The Worker Health Checks (WHC) provides information and advice to inform workers of their risk of chronic disease including:
- Modifiable risk factors - blood pressure, blood glucose, blood cholesterol, waist circumference (obesity), diet, physical activity, smoking and alcohol consumption.
- Non-modifiable risk factors - age, gender, ethnicity, personal and family medical history.
The WHC comprises of a 15 minute (on average) check with a health professional. It features:
- A brief self-assessment questionnaire (WorkHealth Questionnaire), which is completed by the worker prior to the WHC and contains questions relating to lifestyle, personal medical history and family history of chronic disease.
- Physical and biomedical measurements including blood pressure, waist circumference, blood cholesterol and blood glucose.
- An assessment of the worker's risks, based on the measurements and questionnaire response.
- Provision of appropriate advice to assist the worker in addressing any risks identified.
During the WHC, the worker is provided with a booklet (Your WorkHealth Check) which includes a record of results, provide explanations of health risk factors and brief advice. The worker is also provided with verbal advice and additional lifestyle information in the form of Tip Sheets.

WorkPlace Health Promotion Grants
Workplace health promotion grants are one-off funding opportunities for employers to build or expand programs that promote worker health and encourage healthy behaviours in the workplace.
Workplace grants are available to employers who have already offered health checks to the majority of workers in the last two years - as a foundation for ongoing workplace health promotion activities.
The WorkHealth program will fund workplace health promotion activities that:
- Encourage healthy behaviours and improve the health and well-being of people at work; and
- Create a supportive work environment that makes healthy choices easy for workers and encourages them to maintain healthy behaviours in the future.
To be eligible to apply for a workplace grant, you must:
- Have offered health checks to the majority of your workers in the past two years,
- Be a Victorian business or have Victorian based operations, and
- Pay a WorkSafe Injury Insurance premium or be an approved WorkSafe self insurer.
Successful workplace health promotions are designed around the needs of workers and the goals of the business - so no two programs will be the same. To develop a program an employer may be guided by workforce needs or potentially informed by previous health checks which flag health risks.
Ford Health is happy to assist you through the health promotion grant process.
